Eternal Echoes Vol. 9: Tongues of the First Frost

about

Tongues of the First Frost

Not a single black walnut remains
hanging
and too much steel
blue sky
between skeleton limbs
already
not all of us
ready for this release

or to learn to dance
a salsa with
the Winds of Autumn
a tangle with invisible limbs

Under the Rhythm
Of the Fallen
The willing surrender
This Red Maple symmetry
crushed under first frost

Leafing
Behind

The saunter in air
choreograph the Kamikaze
ballet
What hidden muse voice
maps your descent

And where is your wise Cartographer?

For what’s left of your dance
caked in the tickles of the too-early ice

trying to still Time
trying
in vain and glory
to still paint green
possibility

But dark brown haunts of Time
Dawn the new season of this man,
the bearded chlorophyll
the white hairs crystallized
and frail limbs curved into a frozen gesture

You have returned home
unyoung
but not quite elder enough
for memory to ripen your swansong

So
Show me your breath.

And Who are You
halfway through
The number of warm breaths
left
to heat and unfurl
your frozen fists
palms open wide
to receive the last prayer,
the dawn of your death?
